Course Syllabus

TR 253- Stage Lighting is an introductory lighting course that introduces students into the elementary elements of design and technology for stage lighting. The course focuses on the application of the controllable qualities of stage lighting to achieve the functions of stage lighting. Additional focus is placed on the technological aspect of stage lighting: electricity, reflection, refraction, color, and control (dimmers, DMX). Below are projects students work as part of the class.

The Avatar Project: the first project for Stage Lighting. This project revolves around using concept imagery to communicate design intent, and then design a lighting look using Capture. Students are assessed on the strength of their concept image, and their use of the controllable qualities of stage light to recreate the image in Capture. Images should come from the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, or a realistic image that could fit into the Avatar world. Student research images and renderings are below.

The Midterm Project builds on The Avatar Project. Students choose between Adam Szymkowicz's Hearts Like Fists or Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice. Students then create formal design presentations and put together realized renderings of their work. Below are student examples.

The final for this course is a lighting design for a 3-5 minute piece of instrumental music or creating a fully realized design for Marco Ramirez's I am not Batman. Student work for I am not Batman is below.
